Portfolio Pointers…..

Just wanted to share a few of the wise words I am hearing from my book interviews. These are just a few tips that keep coming up:

1. when people ask what you do – say “I’m involved with……..” start to talk more openly about the projects that you are working on at the moment. You will start to build a picture in other people’s mind and just as importantly your own mind,  of your brand.

2. Build YOUR network – most of your work will come not through close friends but acquaintances – people one step removed.       Oli Barrett

3. Start a Salon – no not that type….but just start for example,  holding a 90 min breakfast get together – and start introducing people to one another. Or could be early evening thing – so people can go elsewhere afterwards.

Don’t think of this as networking – its “making the most of people to your mutual advantage” Carole Stone

4. Blog – create and feed regularly. People can see where much of your passion is. Karen Cannard – The Rubbish Diet

5.Keep in touch with your network of acquaintances. If you see an interesting article/paper/rss feed/video – simply mail it to them. Takes several seconds and another communication has taken place. Amazing how many opportunities come this way. Used sparingly for best results.

6.Google Alerts – tells you quickly and easily what the organisations you are involved with or would like to be involved with are up to.

7.Undergear your life – if you can – save 3 – 6 months money and try to pay off debts. Work out how much money you need to live on and maybe take a part time job that will cover the basics while you work on your master plan.
