Reinventing “work”

Rethink how you view “work”. Does work have to mean 9-5 Mon – Fri? Does it mean going to an office/workspace a good drive away from your home? Does it mean hard and fast hours, line manager, General Manager, fixed holidays, pensions and benefits? Some of the benefits can obviously be attractive but what happens when your job no longer exists, cutbacks have to be made or your company closes down? Are you in control? Or someone who doesn’t know you? What’s your plan? Do work-time and play-time have to be so rigidly segmented? Is “work” something we don’t like doing and “play” something we do?

There is another way……

Think of “a portfolio of work”. Portfolio

It’s that simple and that hard. See your career as a “portfolio of work” or “portfolio of projects” that interest you and play to your skills. Forget job titles. You can literally think of it as a portfolio – carrying around with you all the skills and abilities you need. If you have several projects on the go, losing one may be disappointing but not a disaster.

Barrie and I will post more about the Portfolio Careers book – which will be published in Sept/Oct.

Great idea and gets you out of your own status quo…most people have more than one talent so why not leverage as many as possible and dream your dream!

Indeed – I am sure more and more people will choose to follow this work style. Get paid and do the work you love. Its a no brainer!
