Are you a LAT?

In talking to large numbers of portfolio workers over the past 12 months we have come across some who have interesting relationships with the spouse or significant other, namely, that they have a clear monogamous relationship but are living apart. The latest report form the Office of National Statistics now identifies a social trend that is growing so rapidly it has been given its own acronym. Living Apart Together relationships (LATs) happen when two people are in a committed relationship but live apart. The ONS estimates that 2 million people are LAT-ing: three in 20 people aged 16-59 – about the same as those cohabiting. The ONS dryly describes true LATs as “the existence of a relationship, which is understood to include a sexual relationship, between partners who each have their own separate address”. We doubt very much that portfolio workers are more likely to have such a relationship than those following other career patterns but we would love to hear more from portfolio workers on this issue.
