Knowing when to turn off

In our new book – due out in October by the way – we make the distinction between work life balance and work life blend. The balance view reinforces the distinction between your working life and non – working life. Portfolio workers are more likely to opt for ‘blend’ as this describes a life where it is not easy to draw the line between work and life. Most of the people we interviewed for the book talked about how holistic their lives were. Some actually said that they did not always know when they were working and when they were not. We both love this aspect of portfolio working. However, there are dangers and this was brought out clearly in a report by Credant Technologies that found that a quarter of employees do work on their laptop in bed, before going to sleep (much to the annoyance of their partners). And over half of the respondents work in bed for between two and six hours every week. 8% admitted that they spend more time on their mobile devices during the evening than talking to their partners.

So keep your blend in balance!
