Many portfolio workers use mindmapping to help make sense and organise their complicated lives. There are many apps available on the web to help you do that, including the excellent site with Tony Buzan’s seal of approval. This will cost you around £50. However, there are now some free mindmapping tools to be found which, though not as zingy as the versions for sale, still offer the basic functionality. Try bubble.us. You could also look at FreeMind. This is the one that we use in our book from Richard Papworth Smith as he brainstorms all the possibilities that occur to him about his career.
