Starting a portfolio career

The one question we probably get asked more than any other is ‘how do you start’. Carolyn Pearson is someone who has just done that so it is very interesting to listen to her strategy. Like so many  portfolio workers we have met she has used redundancy money to buy her some time, she has taken one part time job to give her some financial security and is already experimenting with two other portfolio possibilities. I think that one of her ventures is a very innovative idea and am sure will bring her great success. Are you female and travel alone a great deal then have a look at her site, Maiden Voyage.  In a previous discussion with Carolyn she also reminded me of another great technique in getting started. Skill swapping. She swapped her considerable IT skills for other skills that she was lacking. It costs you nothing and of course there are always additional networking prospects. Listen and watch a new portfolio worker.

Hi John – at the risk of yet more self promotion that is exactly what the book attempts to do. It sets out 10 steps you might want to take prior to embarking on a portfolio career including of course the decision as to whether or not it is the right work style for you.
