There are more and more people setting up businesses from home as this excellent research report from Enterprise Nation shows. A big plus is that the G’ment are actively encouraging this and ensuring that people can do this without having to pay business rates, seek planning permission and giving guidelines for a model tenancy agreement so that Landlords remove a contract clause which says that people cannot run a business from their home.

The stats on this infographic says it all and they are contributing over £300 billion to the economy. Between 65 and 86 % of these hompreneurs who started up during the recession would not wish to return to a traditional job. 30% of them were created in the last year alone and contrary to stereotyping they were not all women (64%). They were also not all young mums. Only 3 out of 10 were young mums with kids under 10. Also against stereotyping the main sectors were creative services , business services and retail for women and business services, creative and consulting for men. 30% of them had 2 or more jobs including their home business so are indeed classic portfolio workers.
